Women in Ethiopia have been suffering from multiple deprivations that marginalized their pivot role expected to play in the social, cultural, economic and political spheres of life of the society at large. This is attributed by many factors, amongst which, lack of finance, education, and health care services, low access to land and control overs resources and limited opportunity to employment and minimal participation in the power sharing and decision making. All the above stated factors are attributed as the results of the patriarchal value system that has been practiced by the society for the generations. These factors have heavily been contributed to discourage not only to improve their well-being but to diminish women’s active participation in the overall socio-cultural and politico-economical affairs of the society at large. The real situations, in the same way, depict the authentic living and working condition of women in western Oromia regional state in Ethiopia; where by the Ethiopia Catholic Church Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte working to empower the social and economic states of the women for over 60 years.
Ethiopia Catholic Church Social and development commission of Nekemte has been constituted based on the social teaching of the universal catholic church and inspired by the Gospel values to promote integral human development in further responding to ever growing needs of assisting communities at the grass-root level.
Gender equality and social inclusion is one of the thematic areas of our intervention to promote gender equality and enhance the economic, spiritual social, political and legal empowerment of women and girls in Ethiopia, by strengthening synergy among its constituents, enabling joint effort of all actors and ensuring accountability towards protection of women’s rights. The Social and development commission of Nekemte Catholic Church is committed to reach and respond to the challenges encounter gender equality and social inclusion through designing relevant projects in different operational area of our ecclesiastical territories.
